  4.     Do some airlines have too large a share of business at
  5. certain airports? The Justice Department showed its concern
  6. about that possibility last week, when it opposed Eastern Air
  7. Lines' proposed $75 million sale of eight gates at the
  8. Philadelphia airport to USAir. Reason: USAir would control 23
  9. of the airport's 49 gates. Consumer activists contend that such
  10. dominance gives a carrier an unfair ability to boost fares.

  12.     In a new study, the General Accounting Office reported last
  13. week that at airports with one or two dominant carriers, fares
  14. per passenger-mile were 27% higher than at other airports.
  15. Airline spokesmen disputed the conclusion. The Air Transport
  16. Association, an industry group, released a study showing that
  17. fares were only 3.8% higher at hub airports. Congressional
  18. subcommittees are studying both reports.
